ETP Treatment Steps & Best Chemicals Used
1. pH Correction
pH control is the first and most important step in any ETP.
- Chemicals Used: Caustic Soda (NaOH), Lime, Soda Ash, Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
- Purpose: Neutralization & preparation for coagulation
- Ideal pH: 6.5 – 7.5
2. Coagulation
To destabilize suspended particles, oil, grease, colour molecules.
- Best Coagulants:
- Alum
- Ferric Chloride
- PAC (Poly Aluminium Chloride)
- Ferrous Sulphate
- Dosage Method: 50 – 500 ppm (based on jar test)
- Action: Breaks colloidal bonds & settles sludge bottom.
3. Flocculation
To form big flocs after coagulation for fast settling.
- Flocculants:
- Anionic Polyelectrolyte
- Cationic Polyelectrolyte
- Non-ionic Polymer
- Dosage: 0.1 – 1.0 ppm (Highly concentrated — cost saving)
- Purpose: Settling efficiency increase 5×
4. Colour Removal (Textile / Dyeing / Chemical Units)
- Decolourants:
- Polyamine
- Decolourant DCD
- Anionic colour remover
- Action: Removes 80–95% colour
5. COD/BOD Reduction
- Chemicals Used:
- Hydrogen Peroxide + Catalyst
- Fenton’s Reagent
- Copper-based oxidizers
- Biological enzyme boosters
- Result: COD reduction from 2500 → 350 mg/L
6. Sludge Management
- Sludge thickener chemical
- Polymer for dry cake
- Drying bed improvement
Chemical Dosage Calculation (Standard Method)
Formula:
Dosage (ppm) × Flow (m³/hr) × 1000 = grams/hr
Example:
Flow 20 m³/hr
Coagulant dosage 150 ppm
150 × 20 × 1000 = 3,000,000 mg/hr = 3 kg/hr
